Photos From the Civil War Game 2014

Unfortunately for Oregon State fans, this years version of the Civil War rivalry game against the Oregon Ducks turned out to be more of a massacre than a real battle. The Ducks were just too much for a struggling Beaver team, who ended the season 5-7. Still, my wife was kind enough to get me a ticket for my early Christmas present, and that provided me the opportunity to experience the rivalry first-hand, starting with the tailgating.

And then, once in the stadium, sitting just three rows back from the Ducks bench. A great place to watch pregame warmups, and get an inside view of the happenings on the sideline.

Unfortunately, when the team you’re rooting for gets down by 30, being on the opposing sideline is not exactly fun. These teams don’t like each other much, the fans don’t like each other much, and the frustration level of Beaver fans was pretty high as the game wore on. Better luck next year Beavs!

Event Photography – Oregon State Tailgater

Had the pleasure of being a volunteer at the Oregon State Alumni Association’s away game tailgater up in Seattle this past weekend. Despite the loss to the Huskies, I enjoyed the opportunity to meet a bunch of Beaver fans and alums, and “cover” the event for their social media campaign. You can actually see their album of photos from the event over on their Facebook page.

Covering an event like this is quite different, but I enjoyed it, and given the 7:30PM kickoff, I was sure glad I brought a Speedlight and a diffuser with me. Inside the tent, it was still dark enough to need some flash, but the diffuser allowed me to avoid washing out the background, and having red eyes everywhere!

Of course, that also meant carrying around my camera bag all night, but hey, that came in handy for a few photos in the stadium too, which is another post. 😉

Sourwood Inn Asheville

Cooling Off
Almost 13 years ago, my wife and I went down to Tennessee to get married, and decided to drive up into the mountains for our honeymoon. We discovered the Sourwood Inn at that time, and loved the peaceful, scenic area up in the mountains.

Lo and behold, in 2011, when I made the move to my new job in Greenville, we wound up just over an hour away from our honeymoon spot. Naturally, we made it a point to spend another weekend up there and spend some more quiet time in the mountains that first Summer.

So while technically this is not in South Carolina, the Upstate area really has given us plenty of great spots just over the border that we have enjoyed!

SCAD Sidewalk Art Festival Chalk Art

It just so happened that we were in Savannah back at the end of April on the same day that SCAD was having their annual sidewalk arts festival in Forsyth Park.

Naturally, we had to wander around and check out some of the chalk art. Personally, I was really impressed at the amount of time and detail put into some of the drawings.

Obviously, this is hard, and dirty work.

Some of the art work was pretty serious stuff…

While others went with lighter fare as their subject material.

Still it was a lot of fun checking out all of the art work, and a bit sad to know that the first good rain would wipe it all away. Then again, with everyone taking photos of the art work, is it really gone forever? 😉

That is something to ponder, maybe while looking into the hypnotic cat’s eyes….

Train Watching in Folkston Georgia

Tracks

After slogging through the rain all morning at Okefenokee, we were ready for lunch. Angela had read about a nearby town, Folkston, that had been on CBS This Morning and other programs because of it’s fame among rail fans around the country. Seems that all of the rail traffic going into and out of Florida has to go around all that swamp land, and it does so by being funneled through Folkston. Up to 75 trains a day pass through this little town, which must make it a noisy place, but they have embraced this reality and turned it into a community gathering place, complete with a watching platform, ceiling fans, wifi, picnic tables and a speaker that picks up the rail radio signals.

Train Watching Platform

It was a little chilly by the time we finished our lunch, but we hung around for the next train to come through. With all it’s noise and clamor, the train gets everyone’s attention, but then again, that’s why you’re at the Folkston Funnel to begin with.

Going to Canada, eh?

It was the kind of gathering place where I could see spending time in my retirement years. Going down to the platform, maybe with my radio to listen to a ball game, and watching trains go by.
